Seven years and two albums later, Ariana Grande has stepped back into the public eye and set out on her Eternal Sunshine tour. She is performing across North America and the United Kingdom this summer along with the release of her newest album, 'Petal', which is available July 31st.

Catching her set at Barclays Center earlier this month, the scale and vision of the production stood out right away. Grande and her team built the night around a clear movie concept, breaking the show into distinct acts separated by story-driven intermissions. During those breaks, a large center screen played short films starring Ariana that shifted the mood between sets, ending with actual movie-style credits rolling as the lights came up. It was a really effective setup, but it makes total sense given her background on Broadway and Nickelodeon and stepping back from the massive world of 'Wicked' to return to the live stage.

Musically, the highlight of the night came during the third act with her performance of her song "Safety Net". To me, it’s a track that still feels underrated in her catalog, and hearing it fully staged brought out its best qualities. Another standout was "Dangerous Woman" and the vocal power and control she brought to that track were unbelievable, proving her range hasn't lost a thing. Amid endless online commentary about her physical and mental health, her live performance cuts straight through the noise. When she’s on stage, the talent speaks for itself.

Whether that live energy carries into the new record is the next question. The lead single, "hate that I made you love me," feels like a shift away from the warmer, R&B-leaning sound of 'Positions' and 'Sweetener', making it a track that might take some time to settle into. Still, a lead single rarely tells the whole story. When her eighth studio album drops on July 31st, it will give us a much clearer picture of where her music is headed next, backed by the same phenomenal voice that has defined her career from the start.
